From Compact car to Family sedan

Up until last weekend I was getting the response ‘Wow you’re small for xx number of weeks’ when I mentioned how far along I was. (32 weeks for the record). That has all changed in the last couple of days. Bubba has had a growth spurt and consequently so have I. What was a nice little compact car is now a family sedan and looks like it’s heading towards a people mover!

Unlike my sister I have not given in to the penguin waddle as yet but dropping things on the floor is getting increasing frustrating as the effort it takes to pick them up has doubled.

Amazingly I still have a semblance of a belly-button and no stretch marks (praise God). If it could just stay that way till the birth I will be over the moon.

We're off to the snow next week for some De Rooy family fun in the freezing cold. Stay tuned for some photos of me looking like a marshmellow in the pink parka I am borrowing from my mother-in-law, making snow-men with my brother & sister-in-law and generally lazing about.

Sleep, glorious sleep

Be warned – the next person that tells me that my lack of sleep is preparing me for motherhood is going to cop a swift roundhouse kick to the head.

I know it’s probably true but when I’ve only managed about 2 hours sleep 2 nights in a row and had to head off to the office in the morning and try to use my brain; it’s not want I want to hear.

Our lovely double bed (thanks Dad…it’s still going strong) which we never used to have a complaint about, now feels more and more like a single bed! I’m beginning to long for the King-sized enormousness of Ast & The Bird’s bed. Last time we stayed at their place I freaked out cause Al got into bed and I didn’t even notice he was so far away. Now I wish I had the space to roll from one side to the other without having to pick myself up and turn on the spot. I feel like a spit roast.

Hopefully Al is picking up our new spare bed today. Even though it’s a single I am getting the feeling it is going to get a bit of use before bubba arrives…probably from Al so he doesn’t have to put up with me wriggling and fussing about in bed.

Where the action's at

Yesterday we got a peek at the 'staging area' for our upcoming baby action in September. Or in other words we toured the Birth Suite at Royal Brisbane Hospital.

I don't know if Al was particularly fussed on the specifics, but for me it definately gave me more confidence. I am not one that likes to 'wing it' and have never practised the mantra 'It'll be alright on the night.' I'm a planner. If I am going somewhere I have never been before I go armed with directions, maps, bus schedules etc so I feel confident I know what to expect. Now I have seen the birth suite, sussed out the parking situation and know where to go when I get to the hospital I am feeling a lot better.

We also had our last childbirth class with the Physiotherapist. This class was aimed at coping mechanisms for labour, particularly positions, exercises, breathing and relaxation. It was funny watching a group of pregnant women (myself included) battle with beanbags and fit balls in an attempt to get comfortable, knowing the whole time that all the 'equipment' in the world isn't going to reduce the pain of the contractions.

My favourite part of the class was the massage part. The physio made the 'support people' ie Al, practise different types of massage aimed at helping us to relax and release tension. I could have fallen asleep right then and there!

After the class we went to visit one of the couples in our class who were in hospital for observation. The mum-to-be had pre-ecclampsia and was going to be induced but when we found her hubby outside the birth suite he said she was being prepped for caesarian. She was 37 weeks!

I keep thinking...'it's okay i've got 10 or 11 weeks to go yet' but in reality I could only have 6 or 7 weeks to go. A couple of days ago they were thinking they had a few more weeks up their sleeve and then bam! their baby daughter arrives in the world.

Better start thinking about getting a bit more organised.....
