Learning gender roles

It's a wondrous thing to watch your children grow and develop. It's particularly interesting to note the things they observe and mimic from your own behaviour.

Miriam's latest thing is to pretend to be "the lady" or "the man". She will often pipe up when she's playing and say "Mummy I being the lady". Generally this means she is cleaning. If she is being "the man" she is general pretending to fix her car with the toy hammer and plastic knife.

Al and I were somewhat surprised to see these very definite gender distinctions seeing as these roles are not black n white in our household.

It's also hilarious to watch Miri discipline her teddies and dolls like we discipline her. Baby doll will often be sent to her room for being rude, or Elmo will be in time out because he didn't listen. Well, at least we know she understands what's going on.

Aah the joys of being two and a half!
