Blame Canada, blame Canada

It's true, I do blame Canada...... for one of the most amazing holidays we have ever had. If New York was crazy and hectic, then Canada (or more specifically Montreal) was the exact opposite.

The Canada part of our trip was primarily planned to visit my former boss at Alcan, Stefano, and his family. We hadn't seen them since they left Australia 3 years ago. Of course at the time we said "sure we'll visit", but have never actually got around to it until now. Thanks to SB and the troops we had a wonderful time experiencing all that Quebec and Montreal have to offer.

After a quite first day mostly recovering from the drive from NYC, I spent the next two days in the Rio Tinto Alcan office meeting my colleagues while Al and Miri amused themselves exploring parts of Montreal.

We shopped in Montreals famous underground shopping and ate their local cuisine (ie Poutine - chips, gravy and cheese). All of my high school French came flooding back to me as we negotiated our way around the city by ourselves. Allan soon learnt that I wasn't kidding when I said "you need to learn some basic French before we get to Montreal". Having said that everyone was very accommodating when they realised (which didn't take long) that we were not French speakers.

SB took us to Old Montreal (kind of the like The Rocks in Sydney but bigger and older) and on the weekend we all went to Quebec City.

Unlike NYC, Canadians appreciate good coffee (particularly SB) so we enjoyed a number of fine coffees in Canada. I would recommend Tim Hortons (coffee chain) for flavoured coffees and yummy doughnuts. Without a doubt thought, my favourite was Beaver Tail. A large flat doughtnut type thing with toppings like caramel or banana, or nutella (see pic below). It's one big piece of fat and sugar but boy did it taste good MMMMMMM!

They also have fantastic bagels. There was one place that open 24hrs. We drove past at 11pm and got a dozen bagels for breakfast the next morning. They made the car smell soooooo good.

Now it's time for "Canada - the best bits" in pictures

Glad you had a wonderful time in Canada and NYC.
I saw the pictures first and was worried about the beaver's tail - so glad it is not meat!
